Climate change [is] now found to be the key factor accelerating all other drivers of forced displacement. These persons are not truly migrants, in the sense that they did not move voluntarily. As forcibly displaced not covered by the refugee protection regime, they find themselves in a legal void.

WHO WE ARE

Forced migration due to environmental reasons has driven many people from their homes, and caused seemingly insurmountable difficulties. Our goal is to increase visibility of this issue and the environmental migrants themselves by providing a platform for them to share their stories. We strive to give a voice to silenced communities that are most affected by climate change, despite only being responsible for 1% of global emissions. By including these people into the dialogue, we hope they gain more legal protection and political representation, and have a say in the unsustainable actions that are affecting their livelihoods. Eventually, we hope to unify the global community and promote a collective will to change our ways and prevent climate change.

OUR SOLUTION

Our four solutions, which we believe will help to address the issues faced by environmental migrants, are visibility, dialogue, political representation, and unity. Through these four areas, we believe increased visibility, understanding, and political inclusion of environmental migrants –– revealing their humanness, struggles, and needs –– will help to motivate the world to take steps to ensure an adequate standard of living for all. We also hope that they will push policy makers to include the needs of environmental migrants in their agenda. Additionally, we hope to solve the environmental refugee crisis at the source by advocating for more sustainable practices and policy changes that may mitigate the effects of climate change.

STORIES

One of the best ways to foster an increased understanding of environmental migrants is to spread their stories. By humanizing their experiences, we are better able to understand that these are not just statistics, but are rather real people with real lives.
Spend some time familiarizing yourself with stories of environmental migrants in our "Stories" section.
You may also help familiarize others by submitting your own story –– whether you are an environmental migrant, or if your community has been affected by climate change, or tell us about any initiatives you have taken to mitigate these problems!
