RHYTHMS OF ITALY
The video above is meant to act as a visual and audible representation of the “rhythms” and “interruptions” of Italy. The “rhythms” of a certain place or country can typically be thought of as the traditional, “typical,” or cliché actions, movements, people, sounds, and images that are connected to a specific place. The “interruptions,” then, are things that may “interfere” with these rhythms or "disrupt" the dominant perception of a certain place–– they might be the presence or influence of migrants, tourists, or people with other cultural backgrounds. In this video, the "interruptions" primarily consist of scenes from a market in Piazza Vittorio, a popular migrant destination in Rome; as well as clips of migrant vendors or food & music from other cultures; and lastly, segments from our time visiting a refugee center in Naples and a "family" of people with varying disabilities. The video is meant to reveal how these "interruptions" are, in fact, not interruptions at all –– rather, they are additions to the dominant rhythm of Italy.
